Why are all those rods sitting around outside their rod

I'm not sure Ken, do spinning rods come with rod tubes?
I would imagine anytime you fly a helicopter in the house you're beggin for
trouble, but Kris is always getting into mischief.

My spinning rods didn't come with rod tubes but I bought
tubes for them, both for home storage and canoe tripping.
Orvis used to sell plastic half tubes, flat on one side,
that don't roll around in the canoe, wish I could still
find those somewhere.

I know the tubes you mean and I agree. Those tubes would be much better
(more compact, lighter weight and stronger) than the other options
available for backpacking. I gave away my ultralight Orvis spinning
rod, which I don't regret, but I wish I still had the tube.

Those interested in such might wish to take ABS (lighter weight) or PVC
(DWV, lighter, or Sched. 40 - heavier, but sturdier) pipe and put a
fitting with an integral hex, such as shown at the link below, at both
ends:

All should be available at most plumbing suppliers, Lowe's, Home Depot,
hardware stores, etc., depending on one's location, at very reasonable
prices. In the US/Canada, one should be able to make a case of 3-4"
diameter for 5.00USD or thereabouts. If you order online, make sure you
know the part ordered is hex as not all caps, fittings, etc. are hex.
Also, if you go with the lighter-weight pipe, make sure you get the
proper fittings _and adaptors_ as Sched. 40, DWV, etc. aren't the same
size but PVC pressure fittings can be connected with inexpensive
adaptors/bushings.

Of course, it won't be as "roll proof" as a flat-side case, but it'll be
less-so than a totally round one. FWIW, a number of commercial cases
use the hex-cap/end method.

My rod tube (for my rod that didn't come with one) is a PVC tube with
end caps that press on. They fit snugly enough that its actually a bit
of a pain to get one off, which is how I like it. I use the whole thing
as as a walking stick when going through airports, and one time ago,
the overlapping part of one end cap chipped off leaving a nice flat
edge. Now, it works to keep the tube from rolling.

I was showing it to some guys back in Latvia, bragging about my
frugality, but they didn't appreciate it. One guy said 'if it doesn't
say 'Sage' on it, why bother having it?' So I'm looking for a Sage
sticker.
