I do remember that the death of the last Confederate widow caught my
attention (seems not that long ago), probably because I'd read Allen

I seem to remember that the last Civil War Widow died many years after the
last vet, because she had married an 84 or so year old vet, when she was 16
years of age, or something like that?

That's pretty much the gist of the book too, though I have no knowledge
whether the novel was at all based on any real person.
