Default A Plea for Sanity

About the only problem I see emerging is the apparent slowdown in the
accretion of new "regulars". The newsreader stats posted by Forty
seems to indicate a reduction in new/return posters and the same old,
same old dominating the charts. The seemingly endless internecine
warfare has to be turn-off for newbies. As I said previously, wayno
calls this place Darwinian and Darwin's theories include extinction.

The whole "Darwinian" business is cute but can only bear so much. Sure,
"survival of the fittest" and all that jazz. Hardly likely, though,
that a newsgroup would become "extinct" in anything like the way a
species does. People come, some stay, some go, some come back, some
stay gone. So, ROFF "mutates", it "evolves", but not in any Darwinian
sense. The size of the "core group" of regulars probably stays around
the same over time, with attrition and "recruitment" more or less equal
(who knows, maybe there's some more or less standard "inner circle" size
for Usenet--the maximum number whose personal histories, likes/dislikes,
etc., other Inner Circlers can comfortably keep in their heads).

And even if ROFF could cease to exist (or if it were to atrophy to
*only* the same 10-20 folks) and the rest of the millions of fly fishers
in the world went and did something else, just how dire would that be,
who would care?

JR

Newsgroups do go extinct. It seems that if the number of posts seem
to drop below some critical mass that will hold sufficient interest,
then it drops off to virutally nothing. I have checked out different
newsgroups over the years, associated with my various hobbies and
interests. I've gone back after a one or two year hiatus and found
zero posts.

Will the fly fishing world go on? Yes.
Will it care if ROFF is gone? No.

The loss will only be felt by us.

No more trivial than your hypocritical plea, just quite a
bit less verbose.

listen, ken, i need you to tell me the truth about something: who the
**** *are* you?

if you are the guy i met at the first clave, and have since, on several
occasions, fished with, drank with, laughed with, argued with, and just
enjoyed a sense of friendship with, but who simply has this inexplicable,
and apparently irresistable, need to become the virtual embodiment of the
term "asshole" during your participation in this newsgroup, then i can deal
with the situation, as we all must do as long as you post here.
but if the "real" ken is a charade, put in place to permit your
occasional attendance at gatherings of folks who enjoy a common recreational
activity, without having your ass chewed out or whipped, as the need might
arise, then let me know the truth. in that fashion, if the answer to the
latter scenario is "yes", i can merely return your sophomoric "**** you"
response on the web and in person, and both of us can get on with living a
little more closely to the truth. in my view, that is what we should all
try to do, without regard to how close to perfection our individual truth
might be.

and , fwiw, tom littleton is as far away from hypocrisy as your online
persona is from a state of grace.

Which is the "real" wayno, the scourge of the newbies or the Kumbaya
evangelist from the guitar group, a friend of mine, or a behind my
back tutor who teaches "roff according to wayno" via email ?

You and Tommy both are all-star hypocrites. I can't be more truthful
than that. It's sweet that you feel compelled to squeal like little
school girls when Louie gets a well-deserved bitch slapping, but he's
a big boy now, when he dances the flamenco on his dick with track
shoes he deserves to be good and thoroughly bitch slapped. I can't
be more truthful than that.

I am Ken Fortenberry, if that's not what you expected either change
your expectations or learn to use your killfile.

YAWN
succinct enough for you?
Tom
p.s. I always liked the sporting bar analogy
of ROFF, but in a real bar, one can enjoy
watching people getting tossed after making nuisances of themselves....or,
getting their asses kicked.

well said uncle wayno-
this has been a question in my mind, as i find it difficult to believe that
folks could really enjoy fishing with such an abrasive human being.......
and as i tend to agree with some of your politics, ken, it pains me further
to know that i could share such ideals with one possessing the persona you
display on roff - (course i'm sure that could be said of many other folks
who politics i share, but will never meet.)

Snakefiddler- will the real forty please stand up?

I'll let wayno speak for himself, but I would like to ask: Where is my
hypocrisy? First, my post went far beyond the recent exchanges with Louie, and
yes he did act poorly(I noted a possible excuse, but it is just that, a sort of
rationale for out of character behavior). I was responding far more to: 1. The
noted dearth of new blood
in the posted stats; 2. The TONE and personal nature of attacks of late and 3.
The lack of consideration between folks who seem to have a long, positive
personal history. Now, how that gets to be hypocrisy, looking back on what and
how I have exchanged thoughts over the past 9 years, I can't figure. It is
interesting that you, and you alone, take personal offense to my plea.
FWIW, I have NEVER killfiled anyone, of my own choice. I figure it leaves me
unable to rejudge a person's character or motives.
Yes, I can, and do, avoid a lot of threads, once they bore me. I know perfectly
well that all of us can. I still don't see where, to those to whom ROFF
matters, a need exists to act like a perfect dickhead, or an insensitive jerk,
to people you interact with.
Enlighten me as to your reasons, if you have them.
Tom

nope, I am trying to point out the dynamic of interpersonal behavior.
Obviously, it passed over your head.
apologies,
Tom
